Even if a particular browser supports it and even if it does not exist in a search list, let's not forget all the enterprise networks that restrict access to the web to proxy servers and utilize proxy.pac autoconfiguration scripts. How many of those will include the following line? if (isPlainHostName(host)) return "DIRECT"; Just another illustration in the long list of reasons it's a really bad idea. It will be a long, long time before a "dotless domain" would return any sort of vaguely consistent behavior.
