try "aptitude why avahi-daemon" to see why it was installed. Your
normally don't need it. Maybe it was installed as a recommend.
Avahi is a zeroconf tool like Apples Bonjour to detect network devices
on your lan by sending broadcasts. It's for automagically detecting
printers, scanners and so on. You can live without that.
