This is the behavior I want. On the new machine, both interfaces are UP and RUNNING with (different) IP addresses. I assume that with eth0 set to allow-hotplug and the wireless interface set to auto, when I boot I should come up with a wireless connection automatically. However, when I disconnect the the ethernet cable and do # /etc/init.d/networking restart, although the wireless interface is UP and RUNNING and has an IP address, I have no internet connection. No ping. I find that even with the eth0 stanza commented in /etc/network/interfaces, I have to have the ethernet cable plugged in to get a wireless connection.
