Greg, thanks for your reply. That missing hyphen just a type as I ran from the machine with the problem to the one that has email. > > iface inet eth0 dhcp > > > > auto wlx2824ff1a1794 > > You might want to replace that auto with another allow-hotplug. > > > iface wlx2824ff1a1794 inet dhcp > > wpa-driver nl80211 > > wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf On my old machine, eth0 and wlan0 interfaces both auto, but without an ethernet cable, only wlan0 gets an IP address and is RUNNING when the machine booted. This is the behavior I want. On the new machine, both interfaces are UP and RUNNING with (different) IP addresses. I assume that with eth0 set to allow-hotplug and the wireless interface set to auto, when I boot I should come up with a wireless connection automatically. However, when I disconnect the the ethernet cable and do # /etc/init.d/networking restart, although the wireless interface is UP and RUNNING and has an IP address, I have no internet connection. No ping. I find that even with the eth0 stanza commented in /etc/network/interfaces, I have to have the ethernet cable plugged in to get a wireless connection. I fail to understand how this can be so. > > I'm surprised to see both interfaces assigned an IP address even though > > I'm currently using ethernet wired. > > Since you defined your usb interface in interfaces with auto instead > of allow-hotplug, that doesn't surprise me. Although this is not the behavior of my old machine (devuan jessie), in which both interfaces are auto, although it has no CAT5 cable. > > One problem is that no mail gets out. Also at 84 after 8 hours of very intense work (unrelated to computers), I don't function very well :-;. > > Greg > > > -- > web site: http://www.gregn.net > gpg public key: http://www.gregn.net/pubkey.asc > skype: gregn1 > (authorization required, add me to your contacts list first) > If we haven't been in touch before, e-mail me before adding me to your > contacts. > > -- > Free domains: http://www.eu.org/ or mail dns-mana...@eu.org > _______________________________________________ > Dng mailing list > Dng@lists.dyne.org > https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng _______________________________________________ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng
