My humble opinion, is that GTK is a dead end, unless one wants to be a slave to the GNOME project, and there has been a dismissive attitude shown toward third parties in the past. It's one thing to maintain a program that uses it, but if I were to sit down and learn a toolkit for a new application, GTK would not be it.
