Just my two cents,
Realistically, I believe the only sane choice for a *default* is XFCE
4.12. Aesthetically, applications share a common appearance under XFCE,
even Qt/KDE applications. It doesn't feel as slapped together as LXDE.
The entire XFCE install is far more lightweight on the processor, small
enough to fit on a disc, and a far more reasonable balance of
features/integration than the other options. Most importantly, it is far
more stable than the other major DE players, including Gnome and KDE.
