When I saw your question I had a vague sense there were tickets in trac that were a good match for what you were asking about. I found those two I pointed to but I thought there was at least one more that more specifically addressed admin's use of custom tags making it hard to customize certain behavior -- I couldn't find that one, though, not sure if it's my faulty memory or faulty search. Anyone with an interest in improving something and a desire to help out can propose features for new releases. (See http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/internals/release-process/ for an overview of the release process.) So if you can see a way Django could be improved in this area, proposing it for 1.3 would be an option. I do think there are some ideas along this line already logged in trac that I just wasn't able to find, so you might want to try searching there yourself and see if you have better luck finding stuff.
