Okay. If your point is that you understand the way it's meant to work and you don't agree with it, then the answer to your question is that you can't do it that way in Django's templating system.
I don't know why the Django developers made that decision, but I'd bet it makes template validation a lot easier on them. That's a good thing, especially because the template system is meant to be about as simple as possible. I agree with the general philosophy that as much logic as possible should be kept out of templates. It also makes it a lot easier on non-programming users who develop the templates for their developer counterparts in an organization that separates those duties. If you don't want to use Django's templating system, you're free to replace it.
