Just because there is a new version of python out, doesn't necessarily mean that there's a stable build for your particular breed of debian. If you want to stay on the bleeding edge, then you should compile your own versions of python, mod_python, apache, etc... Just because builds work on winblows automagically, doesn't mean they are completely stable and optimized for the platform. There is a standard way to install stuff on linux, compile your own binaries based on your platform configuration. Debian, RH, and other distros with binary packages provide stable platforms, not optimized platforms, for people that are too lazy to do the grunt work for themselves.
