Perhaps, there is no answers to your questions because of some of them are already discussed here and in other django-related places (like cache perfomance e t.c.), some of them are closed to holywar :) (like to use or not to use of the ORM), and some of them like "How about Django in that regard" contain lack of information, we don't know your requirements. In my mind, it is better to perform some refactoring of your PHP code, maybe switch it to one of the PHP framework. Total reimplimentation of the large system with unknown technologies is very risky and time- consiming. But if your customers allows you, maybe it is a nice choise to move to django. Good luck!
