Another vote for jQuery - if you don't need UI widgets. jQuery UI crashes or stalls Safari all the time - at least when I tried it some time ago. For being rather new I hope it's getting better.
ExtJS (aka YUI-Ext) has the best UI widgets, but I didn't understand how to use it with my (c)lean HTML code (instead of Ext creating everything). It's important (at least for me) to have accessible code that doesn't *need* JS enabled only to decorate some widgets. As far as I tested, ExtJS is more concerned about browser compatibility than all others. (Besides it's related to YUI, what I like to use.) I used Prototype and a bit of Scriptaculous, because it got loaded by the CMS I was working with anyway. I'd say it's okay, but jQuery is more comfortable to use. Some of Scriptaculous' effects don't work with Safari. (And remember: "Safari" isn't just those few Apple geeks, but the underlying WebKit is used by an increasing number of browsers, e.g. on portable devices.)
