We have been working with jQuery and YUI without any problems.
If Django was tied to a library we would have to adapt to the Django javascript library and perhaps that library is not the best for the job. For exemple the aproaches between YUI and JQuery are quite different and each one fits best for different kind of applications. We use jQuery for html centric applications and YUI for more desktop like.
