Easier still: install virtualenv (in the Ubuntu repos), which comes with pip and use sqlite (which should be already installed). I have not had any problems so far developing on SQLite and eventually deploying using Postgres. Why Mako? As a personal preference it is fine, but why general advice for newbies?
