Yep, there's no doubt that having these kinds of discussions on the dev list (which already struggles at times to keep a good signal / noise ratio) is not the way.
However, it was clear at djangocon (and is also clear in the various django IRC channels) that: 1) Many django developers are politically conscious and active, and 2) Many django developers view their participation in the django project *as a political act*. Where, then, can we gather to discuss the social and political issues facing our community, and the social and political implications of the various decisions that we make? To my knowledge, there isn't currently a "proper forum" for this discussion. I'd like to create and cultivate one if I can get the proper guidance from the core team.
