The question: What book should I read to begin SQL Server 2008
administration? I wouldn't mind getting the cert "MCTS: SQL Server 2008,
Implementation and Maintenance" out of it.

The context:
The time has come to add SQL administration to my generalist repertoire. I
have enough SQL knowledge to get by so far (not much). That's about to
change. I will be soon be deploying an installation of SQL Server 2008 R2.
It will be deployed on Windows Server 2008, in Server 2008 VM, running on
our small vsphere cluster. The storage is an EqualLogic PS5000 SAN with 15k
SAS at RAID 50. This may be changed to RAID 10 later as more cheap storage
is added. This SAN is capable of more IOPS than I will need until then.

I will be consolidating over a dozen separate SQL Server Express and MSDE
installs onto the new server. This will include migrating Sharepoint (and
upgrading from WSS 2.0 to 2010, bleh). I do not have any DB admin friends
or senior sys admins of the meatspace variety to lean on. I'd like to
educate myself to a junior DB admin level at least before I do this. The
route I usually take for training is books and lab work.

I figured a good place to start would be the beginner's MS cert for
this, "MCTS: SQL Server 2008, Implementation and Maintenance".
Unfortunately the MS Press book for this exam is rated poorly on Amazon.
None of the competing books appeared to be a clear winner. I could use
some advice on how to proceed.

What book should I be buying to educate and train myself on MS SQL before
deploying an eventually mission critical SQL Server? A cert as a result is
always a nice added benefit.

Thanks!
