Howdy, folks! Happily for me, I have a new gig. I'm now editor in
chief of a new site about Windows 7, meant to be useful to enterprise
IT managers (particularly IT managers who're hot-to-trot to buy new
equipment, since the site is owned by Dell). The site will launch Real
Soon Now, and I have several BIG NAME writers cheerfully working on
articles for me... especially about networking topics. Which means,
hey, you can help!
The first request is a general one: If I'm going to cover anything
related to Windows 7 and networking, what subjects do you desperately
wish a real-live-expert would address... and which other sites seem
to be ignoring? It can be techie or non-techie, but I'm aiming to give
pragmatic, tactical advice as well as overviews for CIOs and other
decision-makers. (Note that "why you should run away from Win7" is NOT
an option here. <smile>)
The second request is more specific. I'm delighted that one of the
first authors who'll be writing for me is Lisa Vaas (whom some of you
may remember from eWEEK; for me, though, I'm thinking "She's SUCH a
goddess!"). Lisa's working on an assignment we're tentatively calling
"The welcome death of the VPN," and I suggested that -- rather than go
to vendors like Microsoft and Dell for scrubby-clean-vendor-supplied-
spokesthings -- we ask the actual practitioners in the field. Uh, that
would be YOU. (Yes, YOU.)
If you have any sort of opinion on the subject (including, "Lisa,
you're approaching this from the totally wrong angle--"), could you
please share them? I'm sure there'd be value in a public discussion,
but also feel free to respond privately (just make sure to include
Lisa, who's on the cc here <grin>). E-mail is fine, or she''ll talk
with you on the phone. (Phones? people use phones?) She'll want to
quote you, I'm sure; the usual format includes name, company, title
("Esther Schindler, network admin at The Groovy Corporation").
Anyhow, here's what she's looking for:
Microsoft demonstrated DirectAccess for its new OS, Windows 7.
DirectAccess is a way to give mobile users more convenient access to
the network without having to fire up a VPN connection. On the user
side, we get to eliminate VPN connectivity issues, while on the
admin side, well, what does that mean? I want to talk to sysadmins
who have been testing Windows 7 so we can get a good look at what
sysadmin headaches, if any, are being eliminated by this new
feature, and then again, what new headaches are being introduced?
I'm a technology reporter, and I'm looking to speak to enterprise
system administrators about this. Your answers will feed into a
feature article that will appear on a new news site run by a major
PC vendor, but this article will feature input from users of a
diverse range of PC brands.
If you have 20 minutes to spare between now and Oct. 27, I'd love to
get you on the phone. I look forward to getting your input--thanks
in advance.
Best,
Lisa Vaas

Can you help Lisa... and me?
Esther Schindler
editor in chief of ...shhhh....
