I know that there is something in the standard allowing for wires to be used for purposes other than what their color codes would normally indicate. when this is done it needs to be done at every point that the wire is cut (including in junction boxes) I don't know if there is an exception to this that says that green wires cannot be used this way, I don't remember reading it, but it may be there.
