Membership is to LOPSA what the GDP is to our national economy and it's not

That depends on the kind of organization you are and want to be. If
LOPSA is a membership organization then I worry for our future. If we
are a different kind of organization where membership isn't a measure
of our "domestic product" then perhaps it isn't as important as we
think it is.

One of the big questions I think the board must decide this year is
wether to try and keep being a membership organization or to become
another kind of organization. I believe that LOPSA won't succeed as a
membership organization because people much smarter than me have tried
without success. If LOPSA can't succeed as a membership organization
then we must adapt or die. I think the best thing to try next is to
become an educational organization.

so how would "an educational organization" look different than LOPSA does today? What would we stop doing, and what would we start doing?

More importantly, why would anyone pay attention to us?

Unless I'm mistaken, Education is one of the missions of LOPSA now, and we have the internal mentorship program and chapter meetings providing this (as well as the mailing lists). We also provide training at some conferences.
