I recently posted and filled a position that I ended up calling "DevOps Engineer". I'm in a situation where we "outsource" the baseline sysadmin to the University's central IT organization (where I used to work as a sysadmin). The library IT group has a lot of developers building nifty applications and services (perhaps you've heard of arxiv.org, for instance).
This person's job is to build and manage the layer in between what central IT provides (OS install, patching, backups, VM environment, whatnot) and what the developers do (write code) by making sure we've got good practices in the middle on things like apache, tomcat, rails/passenger, drupal (yes, we've got a lot of diversity in our evironment.) Since central IT uses cfengine for their stuff, we use puppet for ours and it mostly plays nicely together. To some extent, I didn't call it a systems administrator position because HR would then ask why we're hiring sysadmins when we already pay central IT for sysadmin services. So, giving it a different name worked better politically. But, it's also not traditional sysadmin per se, so it felt appropriate to me. -- Christopher Manly Coordinator, Library Systems Cornell University Library Information Technologies c...@cornell.edu 607-255-3344 On 5/8/14, 7:13 PM, "Michael Johnson" <m...@michaelpjohnson.com> wrote: >Has anyone here changed their job title (or had it changed) to reflect >the more DevOps culture companies seem to be adopting?
