I do feel obliged to point out the Internet originated as a DARPA
project: http://www.darpa.mil/About/History/History.aspx
The folks who actually *built* it were academics, not defense, and had a
different vision from the folks who paid for its development. Yes, this
may have some odd effects on the whole thing.
Yeah, it would be interesting to hear from some of the folks who did the
original design and building to see what, if any concerns, they had at
that time.
