[Discuss] SMS MMS RCS

I've just updated to a new phone and it enabled a new 
messaging protocol RCS stating that is encrypted and more 
secure than the other messaging protocols. This is on an 
Android based phone. Is this added level of security really 
necessary for the average user sending text over the 
providers data stream, no wifi involved.
