If you look at this mailing lists, you'll see I had quite the same 2 or 3 month 
ago.
I resolved this problem by disabeling some modules in /etc/directfb.rc.
(sorry but since my pc died :-(, and I don't remember wich one it was).

No idea. I have successfully run gtk-demo. I suggest that you use a
debugger to find out where it crashes.
