You shouldn't assume fixed device numbers for devices generated
dynamically.  Look in /proc/devices instead of hardcoding the major
number.  Alternatively, sysfs lets you know the device number in a
perhaps more script-friendly version:

> cat /sys/devices/virtual/pps/pps0/dev
249:0
