No trial and error - it is mathematics. Just put on the phone for example 192.168.3.15 and reboot the phone. Now when you plug the USB cable and select developer mode you can ssh nemo@192.168.3.15 from the PC. It is just basic networking. There are also couple of articles how to use the phone for thethering via USB or how to access the internet from the phone via the USB connection.
