David,

The problem is that I did read the documentation, following the instructions on this page:
https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Application_SDK_Your_First_App#Create_a_Connection_to_Mer_Hardware_Device
and they are not working. The page you kindly sent me has additional information, which I haven't had time to try yet and which may point to a solution to the problem. If so, then they need to add the information to the page above. I can't remember where I found out how to enable Developer mode, since the Jolla phone manual only has one line, saying it needs to be enabled if you want it. It's possible I just followed through the instructions on the phone itself.

Yes, the Xperia phone image upload is very well documented, but unfortunately the phone I purchased was one of a batch number where the manufacturers had, for some obscure reason, blocked flashing of new images. Of course, I didn't know that when I purchased the phone - it's not the kind of detail they worry about on Amazon! So my daughter got a free phone and I decided it would be easier to buy a phone with Sailfish already installed,

 David,

Thank you for that specific page which I hadn't seen before. However I
did carry out those steps previously and click Save at the end. On my
phone there appears to be a small bug with the generated password, i.e.
that the Save button remains disabled and I have to delete then retype
the last character of the password to enable the Save button. However I
was not aware of the other steps on that page under the heading "Using
Developer Mode" which I will try. The phone is a Jolla phone which was
purchased with the Sailfish 3 image already on it. Before that I tried
to download a Sailfish X image onto I think it was an Xperia phone (or
whichever phone was recommended for Sailfish) but even though the phone
was unlocked it turned out to be a variant that did not allow flashing
 of new images,

Sahlan,
slow down boy and read more documentation - it will save you time and
headache.

The process of installing SailfishOS on Xperia phones is well documented
including requirements and works pretty well.

my 5cent

regards
