The macros greatly aid package maintainers to do their job more efficiently at a cost of only slightly more complex spec files.
On a similar note, I don't think we even have a current rule about conditionals for non-Fedora-family (OpenSuse, mandriva, etc) packages. (If someone thinks we do and can find a link to it, pleases point it out to me. I wanted to refer to it a few weeks ago because I thought it was something we carried over from fedora.us days but I was unable to find it.) -Toshio
