Ah, turns out my machine was still on legacy grub (grub-efi package) rather than grub2-efi after all. (Though neither of the two packages appears to contain a grub[2]-efi-install tool, at least not the Fedora 17 rpms; but then again, I hopefully won't need to fiddle with that again anyway...)
