Further investigation shows that using WeakRef to cache the updated file
contents is ineffective.
This is because the reference is GCed very quickly.
An alternative might be to compare the version of the file that has just been
checked out against the version of the file in the workspace.
If different, then abort the update and ask the user to refresh the screen (by
which time the workspace should have been updated).
