The tty layer in UNIX systems is a messy area. Using curses is pretty much the only option and the most sensible. There's a small lib for text programming[0] but at the moment is in its infancy. Some people have mentioned termobox[1] to me but I have never looked at it. BTW, we have sandy[2] too, which admittedly needs some more love.
