I agree it might be a good idea to add to mainline, but I don't think the patch is mature enough for tip yet. There are still things we ought to work through, inconsistencies between the odder layout functions (e.g., grid), etc. I can apply it if you want, but I do think we should leave it as a separate patch for the time being.
