To the original poster: since this may not be a simple matter in dwm, you might want to look at i3, which does what you want. I've experimented with i3 a fair amount, and concluded that for my purposes, dwm is marginally better (better use of screen real-estate, and I really don't care about config files -- I'm happy to edit C header files). i3 is good work, though.
