+1 on separating the issues.

While the profile corruption can be tied to recovery failures and being trapped
in a recovery loop, there is a quite separate matter on corruption/loss of the
presumably-recoverable material itself, whether a final Save operation or some
auto-save complication.

The original report on the original thread was not about profile at all. There
is in fact no indication that that the user's profile was corrupted. What was
clear was that the final save failed and left an useless file.

I think tail-gating these issues together is a mistake. There may be common
issues with regard to profile corruption and save failures, but this can be
factored out after the defect(s) are identified.

I think we need to factor in the performance and dependability issues around
auto-save and look deeper into (1) making an initial backup, (2) auto-saves,
(3) auto-recoveries, and (4) defaults. How locking is handled is a factor too
(including on the profile). I have no idea what the resolution will be and the
number of iterations it will take to remedy all of it. If we can find an acute
case to fix first, that will be our good fortune.

What's clear is that the use cases and the failure modes need to be clearly
identified so it is clear what is being repaired and there is confidence in it.
