We'll it's more of a scandal, being articifically created and all.. However, there are two points that help OOo. The first is that open source software does help "recession-proof" businesses and organizations through lower maintenance costs in addition to the obvious licensing.(*) The second is that open formats put businesses and organizations into the position of being able to stay vendor independent and thus gain more choices and lower prices.
