Hi Steven, all,
Changing subject line in this...

John,
There is a consensus about which logo to use. I had no doubts that this
would be the case. B is a good design, with no 'flaws' in it. Take this
tip: Succesfull marketing is done by creating a uniform message and
look. You just posted against that. This makes me question the Marketin
PL. You should support any effort like this one and try to create unity,
in design as in marketing community, as in strategy.
I agree with you Steven in the matter of unified design and message.
Mozilla Firefox marketing with its unique logo and a limited set of
buttons, all recognizable by many already, is a good example of applying
this principle in an open source project.
There is a clear advantage in that and OOo moved too more and more in
that direction in the last years, if you count the elements that are now
mandatory in representing OOo graphically for example.
Perhaps the speed of that movement might seem a bit slow to you, or
perhaps you do not know elements such the splashscreen contest for 2.0,
or the Design guidelines in which Bernhard was working.
Also, the idea stated by Bernhard of splitting the graphical elements in
galleries in three categories like: recommended/mandatory, others and
past is again a step in this direction. You cannot take the freedom of
using other elements by whoever likes them in an open source project.
But instead you can make a clear delimitation between what is
recommended by the project and other elements.
You have emphasized this key element in marketing which you named
"uniform message and look". I believe it is beneficial for the project
that we go deeper into this idea, analize it and end up also with some
To-Do and action items and maybe also with some good things done.
This mainly because at the value and the current spread of OOo we may
have already reached a set of potential users that to whom the way the
product is packaged may be very important in the decision to try and
addopt it.
Thanks for your good ideas and let's discuss further.
Best,
Cristian
Just some thoughts...
