I'm gonna add my own paranoid theory here, there is no factual basis behind it:
Maybe the bug is miscompilation of DataInput.readVInt() triggered recently by
things like randomizing NIOFS buffer size (LUCENE-5161) or something like that.
We had jvms like 1.7.0_25 running in jenkins all summer long and just after we
commit those test changes this weekend this has happened twice out of nowhere.
Also, there has just been jvm bug after jvm bug affecting this method before: I
am not sure if its really safe to encode variable length integers in the java
programming language :)
