I hate to be on the side of either “I always know exactly what should happen, 
no one else does, I’ll do what I want anyway” or “trunk is just about cutting 
edge so  obviously our java version should also be cutting edge”, because 
neither are very appealing to me.

Sill, I’m +1 moving trunk to Java 8.
