Ismael had similar concern about the short release interval between 0.9.0.0 and 0.10.0.0. >From wire protocol perspective, the old clients should still work well with the brokers in 0.10.0.0. So it is backward compatible. However, from programming interface perspective, there might be some backward incompatible changes on client side in order to enable new features. I agree we should try to avoid those changes as much as possible. Feature wise, I believe rack awareness is also something ranking high on the wishlist. After all, given all the new features we have already had, I think 0.10.0.0 is a justifiable major release.
