After we started 4.x, some bugs were fixed in 3.x only and vice versa.
There were enough changes to 4.x compiler that 3.x patches wouldn't apply
easily and vice-versa.

Maybe, with compatibility mode on.  I've never tried it, but I'd be
surprised if it worked.

Apache has a policy of not taking open source code, even if compatibly
licensed, without consent of the copyright owner.
