I now see from the archives at least the final lf issue was present
in the 2.0 release and this looks like the work of
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MASSEMBLY-637, which was has been
fixed in v 2.5 of the assembly plugin.  I will see if bumping the
version fixes the problem.
