All,
Following the CCC2024 hackathon idea of CloudStack script-based
installer [1], I want to propose a new repository to host this as a
sub-project under the ASF/CloudStack PMC. The script-based installer
will make it easier for anybody to try CloudStack on one of the
supported Linux distros (such as EL8, or Ubuntu), handle common
installation/setup configurations (such as all-in-a-box) and longer
term allow users to do quick installations instead of following the
lengthy quick-start guide [2] manually.
I propose to create a new git/Github repository to track this
initiative under https://github.com/apache/cloudstack-installer and to
work with others without enforcing community merge guidelines
(2lgtms+tests) until this is fully developed and tested. It may also
not need official/voted releases, and be simply served to users from
the Github repository directly using one of the domains [3] under the
PMC control.
Thoughts, objections?
Let me start with the fact that I think it's a good thing do to!
I have a few things though:
- We shouldn't use Google (8.8.8.8) nor CloudFlare (1.1.1.1) DNS without
the users consent. We should check /etc/resolv.conf or ask resolved on
the local system what the DNS for that environment is. Or if we want to
use public DNS resolvers, at least not use commercial ones like those
from Google or CF, but use Quad9 (example).
I'm also lacking any mention of IPv6 in the whole script which I think
we should encourage by default for users or at least mention something.
Again, totally in favor with a few remarks!
Wido
