Every time we correct spelling or add a new message to the log we do not go and add a new attribute to persists the old behavior. I think that just produce unnecessary clutter. However, I may be willing to accept, grudgingly, that this be change in ANT 1.7 only and not backported to ANT 1.6.x. So we treat this as a new feature of the task on the new mayor release. If someone has an obscure usage of this or other projects use this as part of GUMP or something, they will have plenty of time to take care of it during the major release testing. Is this a good compromise?
