Fairly specialized case, I agree.
FWIW this case is destructive to your profile data currently (in often
invisible ways), see bug 1246615, which I believe is one of the driving
forces behind this change.
On a sync note, I'm not sure if I understood the conversation
correctly, but as long as I can run the same sync account on different
machines, with different versions of Firefox, I'm good.
