I don't think I uninstalled anything. But it's still saying "((null))",
so I can do any gconf/dconf key-twiddling or other commands that you
need to figure out the problem.

  Below the picture of the display in the "Appearance" panel is the text
  "Current background ((null))".

  I don't know how this happens, but it shouldn't.
