OK, the EDID problem is too significant to not be a factor here. It means the display is not connected properly or is faulty. So gnome-shell can start up but it might treat the machine as having no display connected. Although in theory it should just treat the display as connected but low resolution.
Since you say you can see a cursor still, is that a text cursor or a mouse cursor? If you can see a text cursor then likely it's started on the wrong VT. So try: 1. Ctrl+Alt+F4 2. Ctrl+Alt+F2 Here is the log of the EDID problem: Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: EDID block 0 is all zeroes Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: [00] ZERO 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: NET: Registered PF_QIPCRTR protocol family Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: EDID block 0 is all zeroes Apr 04 11:31:04 Sam-acer-notebook kernel: EDID block 0 is all zeroes -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2083772 Title: System gets blank/black screen after login Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: recently when logging in to Ubuntu desktop with GDM the screen appears black only with cursor appearing as it is, rebooting fixes the problem but only temporary as it occurs randomly initial guess was that this occurs due to the hack suggested at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2077216/comments/4 for issue https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2077216 but even after disabling the hack(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2077216/comments/15) this occurs. This is common to both x11 & wayland sessions.
