Now I see the root cause of problem:

Your scanner doesn't have FlatBed.
To workaround it you could use ADF feeder.

Bug description:
What I expect to happen: I expect to get scan output from the back of
the page when back is selected, front and back output when front &
back is selected in preferences.
What happens: only front is shown.
