gpy98671 until the team changes it's opinion on this, which doesn't look
likely, there would need to be an extension to get your desired
functionality back. However AFAIK webextensions do not have this
capability right now. You can join the conversation here to follow the

Bug description:
There are currently too many shortcuts when opening a link in a new
  tab:

   - location bar: <ALT> + <ENTER>
   - GO button: <CTRL> + click
   - search bar: <CTRL> + <ENTER>
   - SEARCH button <ALT> + click
   - links: <SHIFT> + click
   - menu bar: <CTRL> + click
   - BACKWARD/FORWARD button: <CTRL> + click

This is one of the reasons I'm keeping with Opera. There it is always
the shift key and I have to remember only one key.

  Thanks for reading!
