Hmm.. After having tested it myself, I'm a little surprised that purging
those packages made a difference. Anyway, good that you finally made it
work.

At least when the changes to im-config and language-selector, which we
are now discussing in this bug report, have been uploaded, neither im-
config nor language-selector-gnome will be a problem (but the latter
should normally not be necessary in Ubuntu GNOME).

Bug description:
  In the gnome-language-selector one is able to set the "Keyboard input
  method system". For instance on my system I can either set it to
  "none", "IBus", or "fcitx". However there is no such option in the
  gnome-control-center's Region & Language section, though I think that
  there should be.
