I have the same or a very similar problem, also with Thunderbird 17.06, but using Ubuntu 12.04. I have used Thunderbird under Ubuntu for years but now it crashes immediately, consuming all system resources and forcing me to reboot the machine. I created a new profile for Thunderbird but this only worked for a few minutes before it went the same way. Running Thunderbird with -safe-mode does not help.
