I have the same or a very similar problem, also with Thunderbird 17.06,
but using Ubuntu 12.04. I have used Thunderbird under Ubuntu for years
but now it crashes immediately, consuming all system resources and
forcing me to reboot the machine. I created a new profile for
Thunderbird but this only worked for a few minutes before it went the
same way. Running Thunderbird with -safe-mode does not help.

The same version of Thunderbird runs fine under Windows...

Title:
thunderbird always crash on startup - user independent

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Thunderbird always crashes on startup. This behaviour happens for all
the users on this PC, also if they don't have any thunderbird-profile
  yet.

We have similar systems in our whole office. The Ubuntu installation
is rsynced to all desktops (Some also have exact same hardware), but
none of the other desktops has this problem.

  A gdb trace is attached.

I have no idea where this is coming from. The previous version of
thunderbird (17.0.5) also behaved in the same way.
