I now think that my problem was caused by lack of disk space - culprit
was a different application. Prior to discovering this I uninstalled TB
17.06 and installed Daily (i.e. TB 24.0a 2013-06-12) which also crashed
in the same way but became stable when I removed my second imap account
from it. Anyway after I freed up some 2G of disk space I have now added
back the second imap account and Daily runs happily.

Title:
thunderbird always crash on startup - user independent

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Thunderbird always crashes on startup. This behaviour happens for all
the users on this PC, also if they don't have any thunderbird-profile
  yet.

We have similar systems in our whole office. The Ubuntu installation
is rsynced to all desktops (Some also have exact same hardware), but
none of the other desktops has this problem.

  A gdb trace is attached.

I have no idea where this is coming from. The previous version of
thunderbird (17.0.5) also behaved in the same way.
