Eugene, the GDM source also says you may need to create user 'gdm-
greeter-2'...

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/blob/main/daemon/gdm-dynamic-user-
store.c?ref_type=heads#L809

You should ignore all the threads blocked in poll() because that's the
normal state of most threads.

Fred, thanks for confirming the fix. This seems like a case of GDM
making unreasonable assumptions, failing to support systems whose
/etc/nsswitch.conf has not been updated in several years. Also failing
to support machines where the user might have customised
/etc/nsswitch.conf. All are valid configurations that should not prevent
you from having a login screen.

The regression was only introduced recently in:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/commit/beb16b4746856ebd5b3fd9693775757a06a7bb48
