I could not believe what was written here, so I tested it myself. On Debian Wheezy with Xfce/Thunar I copied my music share from NAS to local disc through smb. 7389 files with 34,2 GB. No problem. Looks like it is Ubuntu specific (Xfce/Thunar also uses gvfs)
